De beweging van de alternatieve fotografie nam zijn aanloop in de jaren 1970 toen enkele Amerikaanse fotografen quasi vergeten historische fotoprocédés in hun oeuvre begonnen op te nemen
Irving Penn en Robert Mapplethorpe drukten hun meest significatieve beelden af met het platinaprocédé waarvan de commercialisatie stopte bij de tweede wereldoorlog.
Vandaag, dank zij de toenemende beschikbaarheid van de onmisbare materialen voor dit historisch proces, worden meer en meer fotografen aangetrokken door de platina-palladiumprint waarvan de bestaansduur alleen begrensd is door de stabiliteit van de gebruikte papierdrager.
